ABOUT US
INTRODUCTION
Bioprocessing and Biomanufacturing Research Centre (BBRC) has been established under the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, UPM in January 2014. BBRC is the extension of the activity of Fermentation Technology Unit (FTU), which was established in 1999 at the Institute of Bioscience, UPM. FTU was valued at about RM9.5 million at the time with the majority of activities were focused on providing large scale pilot-plant facilities to cater for process development and scaling-up of various fermentations processes developed at laboratory scale. BBRC is currently operated as a research and service center specializes in fermentation and bioprocess technologies for various processes that are based on microorganism, microalgae and plant cell cultivations.

To date, the facilities under BBRC include pilot fermentation technology facility (FTU), microbiology and analytical laboratory, a state-of-the art Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility complying with the ASEAN Standards for bacterial vaccines production for veterinary uses, and an upcoming facility for food and food ingredients biomanufacturing in the near future. These facilities are offered to UPM researchers (lecturers, research officers, postgraduate students) as well as researchers from other institutions and private companies. On January 2011, FTU has been awarded Bionexus Partnership Program (BNP) by the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation Sdn. Bhd. as an initiative to further support and promote the expansion of Biotechnology area in Malaysia. With this award, BBRC will be able to offer access to services and facilities on a contract basis to the Bionexus companies. We offer complete services from upstream to downstream processes for the development of your product interest. Our reliable, rapid, and cost effective services will reduce risks, cost, and investment time to ensure our customers can produce their biotechnological products in-line with market requirement.
VISION & MISSION
VISION
We aspire to be a national leading organization providing fermentation and bioprocess technology-related development and services.
MISSION
To be a leader in fermentation and bioprocess technology, i.e. biotechnology development and services
FUNCTION
To strengthen the expetise at all levels, in term of quantity and quality, the research team involves in Industrial Biotechnology research activity, especially in bioprocessing and biomanufacturing, at UPM.
To increase high quality research output and to provide efficient professional services that fulfill customers satifisfaction in the area of Industrial Biotechnology.
To establish the strategic research linkages in the area of Industrial Biotechnology with private agencies and research institutions at national and international levels.
To strengthen research, teaching and training in bioprocessing, and biomanufacturing at UPM, to cater the requirements by the biotechnology industries in Malaysian and Asian region in the specific areas such as bioreactor operation, fermentation technology and downstream processing.
To train a cutting edge industrial biotechnology workforce. Students and scientists gain access to not only state-of-the-art equipment, but practical and virtual training experiences that ensure their readiness for a challenging and rewarding workplace.
To establish the bioprocessing, and biomanufacturing facilities at UPM that have ability to be used as a platform for commercialization of research findings by UPM researchers, focussing on a wide range of biotechnology products. It could be from biofertilizer and biosolvent up to animal vaccines that require Good Manufacturing Practise (GMP) certification for the production.
